Studying lessons and doing homework are activities that few children do with pleasure. For this reason, many parents are forced to look for alternative methods to turn learning at home into a fun experience. In this article, we offer you several inspiring ideas on how you and your little ones can easily combine the useful with the pleasant.
1. Use the objects around you (bottles, boxes, books) to explain key lessons to your child, such as those about weight, size, geometry, etc.
2. Remind yourselves what weather different types of clouds foretold, or how a barometer was made from household materials, and tell these things to your child. And at night, take some time to look at the sky and recognize stars. Easy and interesting astronomy, right?
3. Picture puzzles can teach children many things: names of countries, cities, shapes, etc. It is advisable to gradually buy puzzles with more pieces – successfully putting them together will certainly make the little ones feel satisfied with their achievements. You can also make a wooden puzzle yourself with a photo of your choice. Making it will bring you additional cheerful moments spent with the family.
4. Cooking is an everyday process that you can use to teach children a little math. Ask them to weigh the ingredients or calculate the calories. Don't forget to talk about the connection between nutrition and healthy living as well.
5. History is a science rich in facts. For this reason, children often consider it boring. You can change that by reading historical books/comics to them or watching historical documentaries/feature films.
6. Lessons can become very fun if you move them outside the home. Museums and children's theaters are among the many places that offer ways to learn different kinds of information in an interesting and interactive way.
7. Set aside some space in your home to create a flower or vegetable garden. Encourage your children to take care of it! In this way they will learn a lot about how plants are grown, how to test the PH levels of the soil, etc. In addition, you will instill in them a sense of daily responsibility, whose gifts they will literally be able to „collect“.
8. Carefully introduce rules even during physical activity. Explain them to the children – do the same if the sport involves recording results or keeping other kinds of statistical information. And if you decide to engage in a sport where injuries are possible, start by explaining the safety rules and how to administer first aid.
9. Family vacations are an ideal means both for relaxation and learning. Take board games with you that are both fun and educational. Use time outdoors to teach children skills such as swimming, recognizing tracks, or different plant species.
10. Bring the chemistry lab home. Instead of making children only read about the periodic table, show them a few scientific experiments in practice (of course, only those whose safety you are sure of). You will much more easily attract and hold their attention with something that foams and bubbles than with a thick textbook. That is for sure!
11. Not all children would like the idea of keeping a diary, but try suggesting it to yours. In this way you will encourage them to write and express their ideas.
12. Find out what your child likes to do – whether it is collecting, playing a musical instrument, or some kind of craft, make time for this kind of activity as well. In any case, the learning process will be connected with studying instructions and rules, and that is an important moment for the child's further education.
13. Last but not least, remember that you should listen to your children, learn from them, and help them, even in moments when you feel powerless. Spend time with them, because they will grow up quickly and will no longer want to be constantly with mom and dad!
