How Does Online Learning Help the Environment? - Part II

Using Less Paper and Electricity

In a series of articles, we decided to show you the ways in which online learning contributes to environmental protection.

Approximate reading time: 1m 19s

In the previous article, we showed you that online learning is an excellent means of minimizing air pollution.

Another way in which online learning helps protect the environment is through the use of digital learning materials, such as virtual textbooks and virtual books, online classrooms, etc. These are all tools that help conduct eco-friendly training, as they reduce paper use and energy consumption.

The concept of the „Paperless office” gained popularity a few years ago. The goal is to reduce and gradually eliminate the use of paper documents in offices. No matter how much effort is put into this direction, statistics continue to show high values:

- 90% of the information about a company is contained in documents;
- 85% of business documents are in paper form;
- The paper consumed by a medium-sized business increases by 22% annually;
- On average, for the training of one office worker, around 10,000 sheets of paper are used annually. This figure may seem exaggerated to you, but if we add the paper used for training materials to the paper books and handbooks, the figure can become even higher.

Distance learning completely eliminates the need for printed materials or other physical learning materials used in traditional classroom training. To help you visualize the amount of paper used annually for training, we will tell you that it is enough to build a wall from New York to California, 12 feet high. By using online learning, companies significantly reduce the unnecessary use of paper.
In addition, printing leads to the consumption of a troubling 350 million toners annually, which are eventually thrown away in landfills.

In addition to saving paper, distance learning also saves electricity for lighting the rooms, powering computers and other devices, as well as heating during the winter. A study by the Open University of Britain, which we mentioned in the previous article as well, shows that for online learning, for just one learner, 90% less energy is used compared to classroom training.

As you can see for yourself, conducting online training can be not only financially beneficial, but also eco-friendly. Of course, e-learning does not completely eliminate the effects harmful to the environment, but it significantly reduces them.

Често задавани въпроси

How does online learning reduce paper use?
Online learning relies on digital learning materials such as virtual textbooks, virtual books, and online classrooms. Because training can be done without printed handouts or physical books, it eliminates the need for many of the paper documents used in traditional classroom training. This helps companies significantly reduce unnecessary paper consumption and move toward a more paperless office.
Why is paper use in training a concern for companies?
The text highlights that paper use in business and training remains very high. For example, around 10,000 sheets of paper may be used annually to train one office worker, and paper consumption in a medium-sized business can increase by 22% each year. When training materials, books, and handbooks are added, the amount of paper used can become even greater.
How does e-learning help save electricity?
Distance learning reduces electricity use because it does not require lighting classrooms, powering as many devices, or heating training rooms in the same way as traditional training. Online learning can therefore lower the energy needed for day-to-day instruction. According to the text, it uses far less energy overall than classroom training.
How much less energy can online learning use compared with classroom training?
The text cites a study by the Open University of Britain showing that online learning uses 90% less energy for one learner compared with classroom training. This makes e-learning a much more energy-efficient option. It is presented as one of the ways online learning supports environmental protection.
Does online learning completely eliminate environmental impact?
No, e-learning does not completely eliminate environmental impact. However, it significantly reduces it by cutting paper use, lowering energy consumption, and reducing the need for printed materials and physical classroom resources. The text describes it as both environmentally friendly and financially beneficial.
What other environmental benefits are mentioned besides saving paper and electricity?
The article says online learning also helps reduce the environmental impact of printing. It mentions that printing consumes a large number of toners each year, which eventually end up in landfills. In addition, the broader series of articles explains that online learning can also help minimize air pollution.
