Stages of negotiations
- Preparation.
Before you start the negotiations, you need to decide where and when the meeting to discuss the problem will take place, and who will attend it.
- Discussion.
During this stage, all parties involved in the negotiation present the problem as they see it - i.e. describe their own understanding of the situation.
- Clarification of objectives.
After the discussion stage, you should be able to clarify the objectives, interests and perspectives of all parties to the conflict.
- Actual negotiations.
This stage focuses on achieving a win-win outcome. They should feel that they have won and that their point of view has been taken into account.
- Consent.
You can only come to an agreement if you have first understood the views of all parties and discussed their interests in detail.
- Implementation.
Once you have reached an agreement, you must ensure that the defined course of action is implemented.
