Success factors that determine the outcome of the learning process

How to optimize the learning process and what are the factors of success

Does talent determine success in learning? What are the three success factors that determine the outcome of your endeavors, and can they be developed through practice?

Approximate reading time: 7m 19s

Whether you are studying at university, practicing a new language, or trying to improve your skills in your favorite sport, there are three success factors that determine what the outcome of your endeavors will be.

What are these three success factors?  TALENT, EFFORT, or ENVIRONMENT! Which is decisive?

We are talking about your natural abilities and talents, which Mother Nature has endowed you with, the amount of effort you put into learning, and how optimized the learning process is.

In this article, you will learn more about the role each of the three factors plays in the learning process, and you will understand how you could use the knowledge gained in practice.

Develop your skills with training on various topics.

So let's start with innate abilities and talents:

The first success factor: How do innate abilities and talents influence the learning process?

When it comes to learning, your natural abilities are essential. The more naturally gifted you are, the easier it will be to absorb new information and build the desired skills.

In most cases, the presence or absence of talent does not guarantee whether you will be successful or not. Many naturally gifted people fail because they do not make the necessary effort, or because they do not know how to use their potential properly. It often turns out that many of those who do not have innate gifts achieve success in their endeavors because they show a strong desire and will to work hard, managing to make the learning process more effective.

Of course, there are exceptions at both extremes. It is possible for some people to be so incredibly talented that they succeed no matter what. An example of this are students whose minds are so wonderfully built that they can handle the study materials taught in any grade without even opening a textbook.

Others may lack certain key skills or characteristics in a way that would prevent them from achieving a specific goal. For example, someone who does not have the necessary body type to become the best wrestler, no matter how hard they train.

Many studies show that self-discipline  ( Stanford marshmallow experiment ) is especially important when it comes to achieving success in the learning process, surpassing innate intelligence in importance.

We can say that in most cases natural aptitudes play an important role in the learning process, but they mainly determine how much effort you need to put in to learn the material, rather than whether you will succeed in your studies or not.

The higher your goals regarding the learning process, the more significant your natural abilities will be, as it is more likely that you will reach a point where hard work alone will not be enough. This problem is common when it comes to a goal that involves direct competition between several people.

At the same time, however, the bigger your goal, the less likely it is that your natural gifts will guarantee success. You may reach a point where you realize that relying solely on your talent is not enough.

The second success factor: effort and how does it affect the learning process?

The more effort you put in, the more successful you will be. For example, if you study for 4 hours before an exam, you would do better than if you studied only 2 hours, assuming that in both cases you use the same methods for learning the material.

However, not all time and effort invested in studying lead to the same results. For example, consider a situation in which you can dedicate a total of 8 hours of your time to studying for a particular test. You can spend those hours in one of the following ways:

  • Spend 8 straight hours reviewing the material the night before the exam.
  • A series of 4 study sessions, each lasting 2 hours, held over the days before the test.

With the second option, you will achieve much better results, even though in both cases you will invest approximately the same amount of time and effort. This leads to the conclusion that the amount of work you put into your studies is just as significant as the way the learning process is carried out.

For example, companies often turn to staff training to develop employees' talents and make them more productive and useful for themselves and society.

That brings us to the last factor, which determines how optimized the learning process is.

Optimizing the learning process and how does it affect learning outcomes?

Of the three success factors that influence learning, this one is the most important, because you cannot control your natural gifts, and putting in effort without the learning process being carried out in an intelligent way could be unnecessarily difficult, demotivating, and ineffective. Accordingly, by improving your learning tactics, even through relatively small changes, you can not only achieve better results, but also save time and effort while at the same time increasing your enjoyment of the learning process.

Optimizing the learning process can improve the way you absorb the material. You could spread the material out over time instead of covering it all at once. It is a good idea to identify the key points in the lessons that will matter most for building your skills, so that you can focus on them.

In general, the better the learning process is optimized, the more opportunity you will have to harness the full capacity of effort you possess.

The third success factor - The role of the environment

The environment in which you study can significantly affect your concentration and, consequently, the absorption of the material.

For example, if you study in a place filled with loud and distracting noise, your results are likely to be worse than if you study in a quiet place or with moderate sounds that help you focus. Likewise, if you are trying to learn a skill as part of a team in which the other members are not interested in improving, you will probably not perform as well as if the team members are actively trying to accomplish the same task as you.

The learning environment is one of the main success factors that affect how optimized the learning process is. You should strive to improve it whenever possible.

Practical consequences of the listed factors

As we have seen so far, your success in learning depends on three factors:

  • How naturally gifted you are and what your talents are
  • How much effort you put into learning
  • How optimized the learning process is

You cannot change your natural abilities. You can control the effort you put into learning, but if the method you use is not good, you will not achieve the desired result.

You need to focus on optimizing the learning process. This way, you will not only improve your results, but also save time and effort.

How to optimize the learning process?

Ask yourself the following questions:

Is what you are doing effective? Are you studying the material in a way that gives you the best results for the effort you put in? Is there another method or some change that would allow you to achieve your goal while taking less time and requiring less effort?

Are you studying effectively? Does the method you use help you learn the material well and in a way that lets you apply the newly acquired knowledge at a later stage?

Based on your answers, you should change the learning process to make it as effective and beneficial as possible.

There are many ways you can achieve this:

  • Using a mixed (interleaving) learning technique that involves mixing different topics or forms of practice to make the process easier
  • Take advantage of the protégé effect, a psychological phenomenon in which teaching, pretending to teach, or preparing to present information to other people helps you learn the material

Try to apply a thorough analysis of the learning material, such as highlighting key points, restructuring different sections, and drawing connections between the different parts.

Some optimizations may be more effective for a specific situation. For example, if you are trying to learn vocabulary in a new language, you could highlight important points in the text with different colors. Likewise, if you need to take notes during a lecture, make sure whether writing by hand or on a laptop is more suitable for you and for the specific case.

To find suitable advice and techniques to apply in your situation, ask classmates or people who are experts on the topic.

There is nothing wrong with finding a learning technique that saves you effort and time while achieving roughly the same results as your original, unoptimized technique. If you want, you can always choose to spend the same amount of time studying, in which case the only difference will be that you will get a better return on the time and effort invested.

Avoid premature optimization

Premature optimization is the action of trying to make things more efficient at too early a stage.

For example, when it comes to learning a new sport, premature optimization might involve spending a lot of time choosing the best equipment for the sport before you have even started practicing it.

You should avoid premature optimization because it can lead to various problems, such as wasting resources or distracting you from the learning process itself.

You should definitely ask yourself whether optimizing things is the best course of action at any given moment, especially if you are in the early stages of the learning process. More specifically, you can examine each potential optimization and ask yourself how likely it is to become obsolete, what the advantages and disadvantages are of delaying it, and what else you could be working on.

Not all optimizations are equal, and you should avoid applying those that hinder your learning more than they help it, for example if they require more time and effort to implement than they save.

Optimizations can be excessive either because they are inherently wrong in your specific situation, or because you have already applied so many optimizations that you have reached the point of diminishing returns, where they are no longer effective.

It is important to assess the value of any given optimization both before and after you apply it. Keep in mind the 80/20 rule, which in this case suggests that you will derive 80% of the benefits from 20% of the optimizations, thereby understanding which ones to focus on and which to leave behind.

And finally, an important thing to remember is that although optimizing the learning process is beneficial, in the end you will still need to invest time and effort in actually studying.

Avoid getting caught up in excessive optimization as a way to avoid hitting the books. Compare the time you spend optimizing the learning process with the time you spend studying, and see which is greater.

Summary

The results of your learning are based on three main success factors: how naturally talented you are, how much effort you put into learning, and how optimized the learning process is.

Abilities are the only factor you cannot change, but although they can affect the final results, in most cases you need to work hard to achieve the final goal.

Effort is an important factor, but it would be ineffective if you simply increase it without considering a sensible way to allocate it so that you get the greatest benefit.

The most important factor to consider is how optimized the learning process is, because this is how you can significantly improve your results.

Optimization can be carried out in different ways, but you must make sure to avoid applying it prematurely or excessively, especially in cases where it would distract you or hinder your progress more than it would help it.
